RSPCA Urges us to Adopt, Don't Shop this 'Adoptober'
The RSPCA is holding a special event this month, called ‘Adoptober’ encouraging the public to ‘Adopt Don’t Shop’ after recent figures revealed that the number of people searching for a puppy online “soared by 650%” during lockdown and dog imports into the UK doubled. Dr Samantha Gaines, the RSPCA’s dog welfare expert explained the reason behind the Adoptober event: “It’s wonderful to see that so many people want to welcome dogs into their families and we’ve loved waving so many of our own dogs off into their forever homes. However, we are concerned that some families may not be considering the...
Breaking News: Dogs make you more attractive
This week we were intrigued to read about a new survey from online marketplace OnBuy which revealed that 73% of people agree that seeing an animal in an online dating profile picture instantly makes someone more attractive. Dogs make you look good The study then went further, asking 4,268 people to ‘pick the specific animals that would increase their likelihood of picking someone with said animal’ in order to ascertain which pets make people more attractive in their online profile picture. The clear winner was dogs. Dog lover Photo by La Miko from Pexels So do cats…and farm animals 84% of respondents said...
New study reveals that we may not know our pets as well as we think
How well do you know your dog or cat – are you able to understand their needs? According to a new study by the Royal School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh, some of us may not know our animals half as well as we think. Researchers have found that there is quite a knowledge gap when it comes to understanding what our animals need and what is best for them when it comes to their welfare. Coping with Change – How to help your cat prepare for the end of lockdown
Last week we wrote about how coming out of lockdown could be a ‘ticking time bomb’ for dogs that have become used to having their owners at home with them. The Dogs Trust suggest that many dogs will suffer from separation anxiety once lockdown eases and people begin to return to work - and we looked at different ways to help your dog prepare for being left alone. This week the RSPCA has issued a warning that cats are also going to struggle with the changes in routine when we start getting back to work and have issued some guidelines...
Making an obstacle course for your pet
At the moment many of us are only allowed outside for essential activities or exercise once a day and some dogs that are used to having several walks are only getting one. We’ve all been discovering new ways to fill our time and some of us have finally been getting round to things that we have wanted to do for ages. This week we really enjoyed reading about a lady called Joe who set up an obstacle course for her dogs and her chickens in Clacton-on-Sea. Joe is a professional dog trainer and she has wanted to set up a course...
