Why does your dog love squeaking their toy?
Does your dog love squeaky toys? It only occurred to me the other day how much mine really, really loves squeaking them. They squeak and squeak until he rips them apart and takes the squeaker out. He likes to follow me around the house squeaking - and always appears with a rubber chicken in his mouth as soon as I try and hop on a Zoom call. Coincidence of course. Dogs aren't wired for sabotage, (are they?) Quite often the squeaking gets a bit much and I put the toys on top of the wardrobe. But then he gets sad and...
Is it OK to feed dogs vegetables?
Following on from last week’s post about whether it is OK to give dogs fruit, and the types of fruit they can eat. This week we are taking a look at the kinds of vegetables that dogs can eat and which ones they should avoid. As you may have guessed, adding a few vegetables into your dog’s diet is fine and many brands of dog food now do this as they add some variety and vitamins to each meal. Some brands of cat food do it too. Although of course we associate our canine companions with meat eating, when given a chance...
Is it OK to feed my dog some fruit?
Many of us like to share what we are eating with our pets but is it OK to feed your dog fruit? Most dogs instinctively know whether something is good for them and will spit out or refuse something that they should not eat. But some dogs like to eat first and ask questions later so it is important in these cases to know whether what you are feeding your dog is safe to give to them. It’s not always a good idea to share your food with your dog as it encourages bad habits like scrounging and begging too, but...
How your dog uses their tail to communicate
For most of us, the sight of a wagging tail means we assume that out dog is happy or pleased to see us, which is often the case. But dogs actually use their tail to communicate in a variety of ways and it is something that they learn to do, rather than doing it instinctively. Puppies don’t wag their tails as soon as they are born. Like human babies, young pups have to learn to use their tail to express how they are feeling. They start to do this at about 3 or 4 weeks old when they realise that...
Some tips for keeping your pets safe from fireworks
Next Friday - 5th November - is Bonfire Night here in the UK - a time when folks gather together, light fires, burn effigies and let off fireworks to commemorate a foiled plot by Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Some argue that the trend for lighting fires at this time of year is also derived from the earlier Gaelic festival of Samhain, but - whatever the reasons - our pets definitely don’t care. They’re more concerned about the unexpected flashes and bangs going on outside the window than who is lighting them and why....
